After the heavy rains due to cyclonic storm Nisarga two
weeks back, monsoon has just started, we have had a couple of showers so far. You
can see the colour of Tekdi changing from shades of yellow and brown to a vibrant
green. Amongst the first greens to be seen are the beautiful टाकळा (Sicklepod - Senna obtusifolia)
seedlings. With the first two leaves these look like tiny green butterflies
scattered over black soil.😍 Missed taking a picture of these enchanting saplings
today, but they are in abundance. Surprisingly, we can also see some larger,
about 1 to 2 ft tall, mature plants of टाकळा on Tekdi.
May be these got water when the newly planted bamboo next to it was watered and
hence started early.
Another plant that we see
at the start of monsoon on Tekdi is काळी मुसळी(Golden
Eye Grass - Curculigo orchioides). Somehow the leaves and flowers of this plant don’t
seem to belong together for me. It feels like someone has dropped a plucked
yellow flower next to some exotic palm shoots😂. So, these belong to one plant,
and a native one prized for its medicinal value is a revelation. I guess this plant gets hidden in the grasses later, so never spotted other than after the first few showers.

One more curiosity at this time of the year is this orchid like plant that I could identify just today - भुईकांदा (South Indian Squill Ledebouria revoluta) The flowers are not that remarkable, but I love the leopard like black spots on these leaves. These seem to sprout from bulbs after the first rains in abundance on the Tekdi.
